The unexpected benefits of learning something new…
Roger Sedarat, an award-winning Poet and a Professor of Creative Writing at Queens College in New York, lives in Montclair, NJ with his wife Janette Afsharian, a Web Designer, and their two children: Milo (11) and Theo (9). Three years ago at 42 he decided to learn tennis. Going from life-long fan to player was no easy feat. He began channeling his struggle into what he does best – writing. One night he shared with Janette his latest poem. She was blown away. She heard a mix of tennis with magical realist imagery from Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s writing. A new project was born! He had something unique and great.
Ideas started flying: a book, a website, videos, a comic strip, poll, contributors tennis stories, “how do we get Agassi onboard?” The ideas all ended with laughter and a bit of intrigue if any of this could really materialize. The enthusiasm for Roger’s new adventure was contagious. Friends started helping by listening, giving suggestions and amazingly contributing with their talent and support. Just as he imagined, it’s all materialized with the new release of Foot Faults: Tennis Poems! He tells us it is the first full length collection of tennis poems published in English. The website Tennis Between The Lines has launched too, promoting the book with fun tennis content all created with a team of friends and family learning and enjoying a little about tennis and more about how… one person’s journey can enrich all of ours.
